Rainstorm wreaks havoc at Adankwaman SHS days before reopening

Students of Adankwaman Senior High School in the Assin South District in the Central Region may not resume school as scheduled following a devastating rainstorm that has destroyed key school infrastructure just days before reopening.

The downpour, accompanied by strong winds, which lasted a few hours on Tuesday [Oct 7, 2025], ripped off the roofs of several buildings, including a 6-unit classroom block, a boys’ dormitory, the dining hall and pavilions.

Desks, teaching materials and other school property were also destroyed.

Reopening

Although students are currently on vacation and no casualties were recorded, the management of the school is considering postponing the reopening, which had been scheduled for Saturday, October 11, 2025.

The affected structures are now unfit for use, and there are currently no alternative spaces for teaching and learning.

The school, established over 40 years ago, relies on mud-built structures, many of which have deteriorated over time.

Meanwhile, a team from the Assin South District office of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), led by its District Director, Nicholas Adusei Sarpong, has visited the school to assess the extent of the damage.

Mr Sarpong described the situation as alarming and promised to submit a full report to the appropriate authorities for immediate intervention.

The District Chief Executive for Assin South, Jonathan Birikorang and Assin South District Director of Education, Isaac Opoku Nkum, has also visited the school to assess the situation.
