According to her, there is the need for women to be given the needed skills and training so that they can take up more leadership positions to bring out their potential.

Mrs Fernández de la Vega Sanz, who is the first female Vice President in Spanish democracy, made this known when she paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP), Nana Oye Lithur, at her office in Accra.

The former vice president, who was in office from 2004 to 2010, is currently the president of the Foundation of Women for Africa, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) launched in Accra in 2013  with the aim of training and empowering women in various fields.

Projects

According to her, the foundation is undertaking three projects in education, health and social leadership in the country.

In education, she said selected primary school teachers were being trained to give children better foundations and in health, a nursing programme was underway to train selected nurses to offer specialised care to patients.

With the social leadership programme, she said the first batch of 15 young women out of about 100 were being trained in social leadership in conjuction with the New York University, University of Ghana, Legon, and the University of Education, Winneba.

Other initiatives

Other areas she said her project was going to look at was maternal mortality and capacity building for women in high-level positions.

Mrs Fernández de la Vega Sanz, who bemoaned the state of maternal mortality in the country, said “we have to raise the level of assisted deliveries.

“We have to help women to deliver at the right place and with the right assistance.”

Ministry’s intervention

Nana Oye commended the former Spanish vice president for her remarkable achievements in the support for women in Africa, especially in Ghana, during her reign.

According to her, the MoGCSP is in the process of taking stock of the country’s achievements concerning maternal and infant mortality.

She stated that Mrs Fernández de la Vega Sanz’s projects, especially the one in health, was going to help the country achieve its target of reducing maternal and infant mortality.
