Armed with stones, clubs and other offensive weapons, the more than 100 youth attacked the NEDCO office in the central business district of the Tamale Metropolis and the GRIDCO station and damaged three offices, a vehicle, a security post and a gate at the NEDCO office and the GRIDCO station as a result.

No arrest

At the time of filing this report, the Northern Regional Police Command had deployed armed policemen and riot control vehicles at the NEDCO and GRIDCO offices to protect property and ensure the safety of the workers.

According to the Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mr Ebenezer Tetteh, no arrest has been made.

He condemned the acts of vandalism by the irate youth and said those found culpable would be prosecuted.
Mr Tetteh said the Metropolitan Security Committee had offered a GH¢5,000 bounty to anyone who would volunteer vital and credible information that would lead to the arrest of the people who committed the act.

NEDCO explanation

When contacted, officials of NEDCO explained to the Daily Graphic that they could not complete some maintenance works last Saturday and, therefore, decided to continue the following day, Sunday, hence the blackout in some suburbs in the metropolis.

Meanwhile, the Chief of Tamale, Nyab Gukpenaa Alhassan Abdulai, has condemned the attack on the NEDCO and the GRIDCO offices.
He appealed to the youth to channel their grievances through their elders for redress instead of taking the law into their own hands.
