Tema aircraft crash: Investigators to remove wreckage on Tuesday as probe begins

Investigators are expected to begin removing the wreckage of the aircraft that crashed in Tema on Monday as part of efforts to determine the cause of the accident that claimed two lives.

The Commissioner of the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, John M. K. Wumborti, said preliminary assessments were already underway after a team of investigators visited the crash scene on Monday.

He told journalists that officials would return to the site on Tuesday morning to begin collecting debris from the wreckage for detailed examination.

Two people have been confirmed dead following the crash of a light aircraft at the TMA Daycare Centre at Community One, Site 17, in Tema.

The aircraft, bearing registration number 9G-ADV, reportedly crashed within the school compound before bursting into flames. The two occupants on board were partially burnt in the incident.

Fortunately, none of the pupils or staff of the school was injured.

Emergency response

Personnel from the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Armed Forces, the Ghana National Fire Service and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) quickly moved to the scene to contain the fire and secure the area.

The crash site has since been cordoned off to allow investigators to begin their work.

Speaking to journalists at the scene, Mr Wumborti commended the security agencies for swiftly securing the area and enabling investigators to commence their work.

“For now, the police and the military have secured the crash scene. Tomorrow morning, we will return to collect the debris and secure it for detailed investigations to determine what exactly caused the crash,” he said.

He described the incident as unfortunate, noting that it occurred barely six months after another aircraft crash was recorded in the country last year.

Probe begins

Mr Wumborti assured the public that investigators would conduct a thorough probe to establish the exact cause of the crash and help prevent similar incidents in the future.

He also commended the police, the military, the fire service, national security, NADMO and other agencies that responded swiftly and helped secure the area.

Investigations into the incident have commenced, with officials expected to begin gathering and examining debris from the crash site.
