It is organised by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts.

In 2013, the maiden edition of the carnival, which is a  national celebration to develop and promote the indigenous cultures into a development instrument of the nation was held.

After the second celebration, the subsequent ones  would also be used  to attract the international community to Ghana as another means of promoting Made-in Ghana goods.

Launching the Ghana carnival 2015  yesterday, the sector minister, Mrs Elizabeth Ofosu-Agyare, said this year’s edition would focus on building the carnival product into a cutting edge activity for socio-economic development.

It is being celebrated on the theme, “Promoting the Ghanaian culture and identity through carnivals.”

Ghana carnival 2015 is expected to bring together more than 3,000 people drawn from the corporate world, the culture and tourism industry and the general public.

As part of the celebration members of the public are expected to gather at the Obra Spot in Accra and walk through some principal streets to the Black Star Square for  the display of diverse cultural performances.

 Transform domestic culture

The launch was characterized by traditional drumming and dancing, poetry recitals and masquerading among other performances.

Mrs Ofosu- Agyare said the initiative would also seek to build a linkage between the creative arts industry and other sectors of the economy.

According to her, when that had been done successfully, the national carnival would be transformed into an international event in Ghana to attract foreign investors.

“Culture is one of the most invaluable resources for sustainable development and nation-building. Therefore cultural revival has to be part and parcel of the entire process of social transformation designed to produce the new desired society,” she added.

Mrs Ofosu-Agyare said the ministry, in the long term, would make the celebration an annual event.

She called on the public to patronise the event and instructed all departments and agencies under the ministry to mandatorily partake in the event.
