Ultimate Sacrifice: President Mahama leads tributes for 54 deceased Police officers lost between 2023-2025

In a solemn national tribute, it has been revealed that 54 officers of the Ghana Police Service have lost their lives in the line of duty over the last three years.

The fallen heroes, who died between 2023 and 2025, were commemorated during the 2025 Police Memorial Day ceremony held at the Police National Cenotaph in Accra.

The service, attended by President John Dramani Mahama; the Interior Minister, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak; and the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohonu, honoured twenty officers who tragically lost their lives in separate incidents in 2025.

Out of the twenty, six had their names engraved on the Police Wall of Honour, whilst the remaining fourteen were recorded in the Memorial Book of Honour.

The wider roll of honour, however, paints a broader picture of sacrifice. A memorial list names 20 officers who fell in 2025, 23 in 2024, and 11 in 2023. The Service, in a statement, remembered "the men and women who, between 2023 and 2025, laid down their lives to safeguard our communities."

"With solemn reverence and deep sorrow, the Ghana Police Service honours the heroes who paid the ultimate price in service to our nation," the statement read. "Their courage, dedication, and sacrifice form the foundation of our peace and security. Though they are no longer with us, their legacy of bravery lives on, forever cherished by a grateful nation."

The ceremony featured the laying of wreaths, with President Mahama laying one on behalf of the government and IGP Yohonu laying another on behalf of the police administration. The event also included the lighting of the perpetual flame, a flag-raising ceremony, and prayers for the fallen, their families, and the nation.

Police Memorial Day is observed annually to pay tribute to officers who gave their lives in service of the nation. The ceremony was first held in 2014 to recognise serving police officers who lost their lives while undertaking lawful duties within Ghana, on peacekeeping missions, or on international assignments.
