Motorists who use the busy corridor linking Accra and Madina are being advised to prepare for possible delays in the coming months as major construction works begin to reshape traffic movement around one of the capital’s busiest interchanges.

The Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) has announced a temporary traffic management plan to allow engineers to proceed with expansion works on the bridge at the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange, a key link on the Accra–Tema Motorway corridor.

In a statement issued on behalf of the Ministry of Roads and Highways, the authority explained that the changes are necessary to facilitate T-beam launching works as part of the bridge expansion project on the N1 highway.

From Monday, March 9, 2026, lanes on the N4 northbound carriageway from Accra towards Madina will be temporarily closed to create space for construction operations.

To keep traffic moving, the southbound carriageway, which normally carries four lanes of traffic from Madina towards Accra, will be reorganised into two lanes in each direction so that vehicles can still travel both ways.

The arrangement is expected to remain in place for about four months.

For thousands of commuters who pass through the interchange daily, the lane reduction could significantly affect travel times, particularly during peak morning and evening periods.

Drivers heading from central Accra through the interchange towards areas such as Madina and the eastern suburbs may encounter slower traffic as vehicles merge into fewer lanes, while those travelling in the opposite direction could also face intermittent congestion as traffic is redirected.

The Ghana Highway Authority says the temporary measure is necessary to ensure the safety of both construction workers and road users while the expansion works are carried out.

Motorists have therefore been urged to drive cautiously, observe all traffic signs and cooperate with traffic officials managing movement along the corridor.

The authority also encouraged road users seeking further information to contact its Public Affairs Division via WhatsApp on 0551622244.

The upgrade forms part of wider efforts to improve traffic flow on one of the country’s most heavily used urban transport routes, though commuters are likely to feel the impact of the construction phase before the expected long-term benefits are realised.
