It also donated 200 pieces of exercise books to the inmates.

The medicines would serve the first aid needs of the 233 inmates of the facility, while the exercise books would be used for teaching and learning in the prison.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the assembly, Mr Nuhu Putiaha, said a distress call by an individual and a follow-up by the assembly revealed that the infirmary of the correctional centre had no medicines.

He said it was for this reason that the assembly decided to purchase the medicines to help address minor health cases at the prison facility.

Appeal

The MCE appealed to the public to also come to the aid of the inmates who he noted were facing some challenges.

"It is our duty as a people to take good care of the prison since it was not made for just some people," Mr Putiaha said.

According to him, "the things that send people to prison are diverse. There are people here who would ordinarily not have imagined themselves in prison. It means anybody can end up in prison through a moment of indiscretion, betrayal or for some other reasons."

Intervention

A journalist, Seidu Bamanjo, whose visit to the prison was what triggered the response by the assembly, said he met a young man confined to a wheelchair in the prison yard.

He said further enquiries from the inmate revealed that the prison had no medicines at its infirmary upon which he drew the attention of the assembly.

Appreciation

The Director of the Wa Central Prison, Assistant Director of Prisons, Mr Victor Douchebe, expressed appreciation to their benefactors and indicated that the intervention had come at the right time to help save lives in the prison.

He also appealed for more support from individuals and organisations to improve on the situation in the prison.
