The suspect, a student of the IMPC who is currently on the run, has been declared wanted by the police.

The boyfriend, Eric Ohemeng, 25, a final-year student of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), is in critical condition at the 37 Military Hospital.

The second victim, yet to be identified, is a male neighbour of Esther’s who heard the lovers arguing about 2 a.m. last Thursday and tried to broker peace between them.

Break-up
Briefing the Daily Graphic, the Public Relations Officer of the Accra Regional Police Command, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mrs Affia Tenge, said the suspect poured the acid on Ohemeng after a disagreement between the two.

It is said Esther became offended after Ohemeng broke up with her.

A taxi driver whose name the police are withholding for security reasons and who was an eyewitness told the police that the two lovers hired his services from North Kaneshie in Accra to the Rawlings Circle at Madina, near Accra.

According to Mrs Tenge, the taxi driver told the police that the lovers told him to first take the woman to her house and then convey Ohemeng to his house afterwards.

At Esther’s house, she said, the two lovers got into a prolonged argument while the taxi driver waited.

After a while, she said, Esther emerged from the house to tell the taxi driver to leave and come back later for Eric, as there were some issues she wanted to resolve with her boyfriend.

The taxi driver, who was yet to be paid for his services, told the police that he drove around Madina, waiting for a call from the lovers, but to no avail.
He told them that he returned to the house to see the two in a fight, noting that before he could stop his taxi, he saw Esther pouring acid on Eric.

Search for Esther

A Good Samaritan who heard the shouts of the two as they argued on top of their voices and wanted to intervene in the quarrel also suffered some burns from the acid which Esther targeted pouring on her lover.

The taxi driver helped to take Ohemeng and the Good Samaritan to hospital and later reported the incident to the Madina Police.

The Madina District Police Commander, Superintendent of Police Mr Kwesi Annor Arhin, confirmed the incident and said the police were yet to get any information from Ohemeng, as he was unable to speak now.

He said because the acid was poured on part of Eric’s face and chest, he was unable to speak and the police hoped for his recovery to provide information on Esther and the incident.

He said the police had since mounted a search for Esther.

Mr Arhin appealed to the public to assist the police in the search for Esther by reporting to the Madina Police or the nearest police station any information that could lead to the arrest of the suspect.
