Women’s Development Bank in final stages of setting up — Mahama at 69th Independence Day

President John Dramani Mahama has revealed that the government is in the final stages of establishing a Women’s Development Bank to expand financial opportunities for women entrepreneurs.

The President noted that the initiative, being led by Vice President, Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, aims to address long-standing barriers women face in accessing affordable credit.

Addressing the nation at the 69th Independence Day Celebration of Ghana held at the Jubilee House in Accra on Friday, March 6, he said the bank will provide targeted financing, mentorship, and business support to strengthen women-led enterprises, which he described as the backbone of Ghana’s informal economy.

President Mahama emphasized that empowering women economically would boost family welfare and national development.

"I am also pleased to announce that we are in the final stages of setting up the Women's Development Bank. This work has been under the leadership of our hard-working Vice President, Jane Nana Opoku-Agyemang. Our women entrepreneurs have historically been the backbone of Ghana's informal economy and yet too many of them face barriers to affordable credit.

"This Women's Development Bank will provide accessible financing, mentorship, and business support that is tailored to women-led enterprises. When women succeed, families thrive and nations prosper," he stated.

He also highlighted Ghana’s commitment to African economic integration through the African Continental Free Trade Area, headquartered in Accra, noting that the continent’s large and youthful population presents significant opportunities for growth.

Looking ahead to Ghana’s 70th independence anniversary, the President reaffirmed his vision for a prosperous nation with accessible education, affordable healthcare, strong infrastructure, environmental protection, and a merit-based system of opportunity.

He urged citizens to remain united and resilient as the country continues its development journey.

"As we approach the milestone of Ghana's 70th anniversary next year, let us reaffirm our national vision. A vision of a Ghana where no child will go to bed hungry. A Ghana where education is accessible and empowering. A Ghana where healthcare is affordable and accessible. A Ghana with world-class infrastructure. A Ghana that produces what it consumes. A Ghana where merit and not connections decides opportunity. A Ghana that is digitally connected from Aflawo to Amelie. A Ghana that preserves its forests and environment for future generations. This vision is within reach, but it requires our collective efforts," he said.
