Yeji bound ferry with many passengers sinking on Volta Lake

A ferry carrying many passengers on its way to Yeji was reported sinking on the Volta Lake on Wednesday evening.

Two boats were sent to evacuate the passengers.

Aside the passengers, the ferry was also carrying about four loaded cargo trucks and three other vehicles.

A stranded passenger told Accra based radio station, Joy FM that the passengers struggled to board the boats which were sent to the scene to evacuate them.

He said the ferry was filled with water at the base and water was still coming into it.

The incident was said to have happened in the waters of Mankrado in the Volta Region.

The ferry started from Makango heading to Yeji.

All the passengers were later rescued with the assistance of the Navy who were in the area and other local boats.

They are also pumping water out whiles floating the ferry ashore according to Joyce Mogtari, Deputy Minister of Transport.
