The Founder and Executive Director of Teen Empowerment and Leadership Dialogues (TELDs), Naa Adukwei Allotey, who stated this in a press statement to commemorate this year's International Youth Day, explained that “with just a smartphone and an internet connection, young people globally are overcoming barriers, launching businesses, championing social causes, and connecting with global networks that inspire innovation and progress.”

The International Youth day was commemorated on Monday, August 12, 2024, under the theme, “From clicks to progress: Youth digital pathways for sustainable development.”

Potential

The statement reminded the youth of the immense potential that digital technology holds for them.

“Today’s young people are not just navigating the digital landscape; they are leading it. They are the innovators, entrepreneurs, and change-makers driving sustainable development in their communities and beyond” it said.

The statement encouraged the youth to “leverage technology to address critical issues in education, health, agriculture, and environmental sustainability.”

Challenges

It acknowledged that digital divides continue to exist, preventing many young people from accessing the resources they need to fully engage in the digital economy.

“As we look to the future, it is imperative that we close these gaps, ensuring that every young person—regardless of their background—can benefit from the digital revolution” it advised.

SDGs

It further underscored the essential role that digital pathways play in advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) stressing that “by equipping the youth with digital skills and opportunities, we can accelerate progress toward key goals, including quality education, decent work and economic growth, gender equality, and climate action.”

The statement called on all well-meaning Ghanaians “to support young people as they navigate these digital pathways, providing them with the knowledge, tools, and platforms to innovate and lead.”

“On this International Youth Day, let us celebrate our young people's creativity, resilience, and potential. Let us come together to create an environment where every click leads to meaningful progress and where every young person has the chance to contribute to a brighter future for all” it stated.
