The national postgraduate medical college, with the core mandate of promoting specialist medical education and continuous professional development, embarked on the programme in 2010 with the training of local instructors.

The college, in collaboration with Wyckoff Heights Medical Center of the United States of America (USA), trained 12 instructors in Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support using the American Heart Association guidelines.

The trainees were certified by the American Heart Association and the college was thus equipped to provide training and certification for the Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support course using the American Heart Association guidelines.

So far, the instructors have trained 85 health workers in Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support since May 2012.

Dr Irene Opai-Tetteh, one of the instructors, said trainings had been conducted at the University of Cape Coast Hospital, the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons, as well as the Medical Unit of the Chirano Goldmines in Bibiani.

The content of the training programme include Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Adults, Child and Infant basic life support and Adult, Child and Infant Choking Responsive and Unresponsive.

She said the college had initiated moves to collaborate with the Chamber of Mines to train medical staff and rescue workers of the various mining companies under the jurisdiction of the Chamber of Mines.
