FDA alerts public on fake Zentel

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has alerted the general public of the distribution and sale of fake Zentel tablets on the Ghanaian market.

A statement signed by the Chief Executive of the FDA, Mr Hudu Mogtari, said the FDA, through its postmarket surveillance, found the fake Zentel in some shops in Accra. 

It mentioned the names and locations of the shops in which the drugs were found as Christiana E. Obeng Chemical Shop, Madina; Nascota Pharmacy, Madina, and Rapnet Pharmacy, Lapaz.

It said laboratory analysis revealed that the fake Zentel contained no active ingredient.

Giving further particulars, the FDA said the fake Zentel tablets had the following features: Batch Number 390160; Manufacturing Date 03/11; Expiry Date: 03/16 and manufactured by Medreich Sterilab Limited, Avalahalli, Bangalore-560062, India.

“Consumers are to further note that apart from the above mentioned manufacturer’s address, the Fake Zentel has another (additional) address as SmithKline Beecham Laboratories Pharmaceutiques 6, Esplanade Charles de Gaulie, 62731 NANTERRE, Cedex, France (an address that is also inscribed on the original product),” it stated.

The statement advised pharmacies, licensed chemical shops, hospitals, clinics and all other health facilities having stocks of the fake Zentel with the above-mentioned batch number (390160) to immediately hand over those products to any of the FDA offices countrywide.

It cautioned the general public, especially pharmacies, licensed chemical shops, hospitals, clinics and other healthcare facilities against buying medicines from drug peddlers and other dubious sources.
