3 Doctors win Shalina Rising Stars award
A multi-drug distribution company, Shalina Healthcare, has climaxed the third edition of its academic-oriented initiative to reward doctors, with three resident doctors emerging as the overall winners of the competition.

Dubbed: “The Shalina Rising Stars”, the initiative aims to enable resident doctors across various medical institutions to share their in-clinical experiences with their peers to improve their knowledge of various medical conditions and how to handle them.
An Endocrinology Fellow in-Training and a Physician Specialist at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH), Dr Beatrice Kisiwaa Baaye, emerged the overall winner.
She led a team to carry out corrective surgery on a case of a 13-year-old young hermaphrodite raised as a female but genotypically a male (Diagnosis Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome).
During the 2024 resident’s academic day, Dr Baaye received a cash prize of GH¢7,500, a plaque and a certificate. A Neurology at the same hospital, Dr Freda Amoatin, placed second after presenting how she dealt with a case of a 59-year-old woman with a hand and a foot drop.
For her prize, she received GH¢4,000 and a certificate. The third prize winner, Dr Lim Abla Kwawukume, a Pulmonology Fellow in-Training and Physician Specialist at KBTH, who presented on an unusual case of chronic cough, also took home a cash prize of GH¢2,000 and a certificate.

The competition organised in collaboration with KBTH brought together resident doctors from seven departments across various medical institutions that presented different case studies and how to manage such cases.
The departments that participated in this year's edition were the Gastrology, Endocrinology, Rheumatology, Neurology, Dermatology, Nephrology, Respiratory and Cardiology departments..

The case reports covered a diverse range of medical conditions, diagnostic challenges and innovative treatment approaches, reflecting the depth and breadth of knowledge possessed by the residents.

The General Manager and Head of Shalina Healthcare Ghana, Vikram Jit Singh, said the company was dedicated to supporting the medical community and fostering national development.
He said the company's aim was to collaborate with the medical fraternity from the grass-roots level, providing platforms for rising stars to showcase their clinical acumen and knowledge.
The Marketing Manager of Shalina Healthcare, Nagaraju Galipelli, said the programme was to open up partnerships with resident doctors and act as a knowledge sharing platform.
He added that it was to support and openly encourage upcoming doctors to share their in-clinical experience, adding that “over 300 doctors have benefited from this programme since its inception in 2021”.
The Head of Department for Internal Medicine & Medical Sub-Budget Management Centres (BMC) at KBTH, Dr Patrick Adjei, emphasised the importance of continuous learning and collaboration in the medical profession.
“Initiatives like these are crucial for the development of our future medical leaders. It is through sharing knowledge, exchanging ideas, and challenging each other that we can push the boundaries of medical science and improve patient care," he said.
He commended Shalina Healthcare for their vision and commitment to making a difference in the lives of people.
