TMA to place surveillance on sewer manholes

The Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) is to place surveillance on its sewerage lines, especially at places where manholes are located, to ensure the arrest of persons who deliberately dump waste materials into the system.

This has become necessary because the assembly has recently observed that most sewerage spillages in the communities are as a result of the deliberate dumping of materials such as concrete blocks and refuse into the sewer manholes.

A statement from the TMA said the Metropolitan Waste Management Engineer, Mr Solomon Noi, disclosed this when he briefed media personnel during a tour of some affected areas in the metropolis.

Mr Noi showed evidence of concrete blocks and other materials retrieved from the sewerage manhole and lamented why some unpatriotic residents could engage in such an act of lawlessness.

Mr Noi made particular reference to a recent sewer spillage in the Tema Town Centre, which the sewage team promptly rectified but was called in again last Friday morning to the same location to address a recurrence of the problem, only to discover that a concrete block had been deposited in the sewerage chamber, with the intention to block the free flow of the sewer, resulting in the backflow that created discomfort for drivers and commuters.

Mr Noi warned that the assembly would deal ruthlessly with anyone caught dumping refuse into the sewer manhole.

He appealed to residents to assist the assembly in its effort at arresting offenders who operate under the cover of darkness to create bad press for the assembly.
