Undertake regular health checks

A Family Physician at the Korle Bu Polyclinic, Dr Jackie Asiedu, has advised Ghanaians aged 40 and above to do well to undergo prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test and mammogram screening every two years to check for their prostate and breast cancer status.

According to her, having the test done on time could provide a certain amount of reassurance as to whether one does or does not have prostate or breast cancer and how best they could be treated on time.

Dr Asiedu made this known to The Mirror in an interview during a free medical screening programme in Accra.

She also advised people to have their body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference checked regularly to avoid obesity.

“Ghanaians must monitor their lifestyles, diets and also exercise to prevent cardiovascular and cardiometabolic diseases, as well as diabetes,” she said.

Organisers

The medical screening was organised by the Word of Life Christian Centre for residents of Okpoi Gonno in the Ledzokuku Krowor Municipal Assembly (LEKMA) and its surrounding communities as part of activities marking the 30th-anniversary celebration of the church.

The Founder and Head Pastor of the church, Reverend Dr Isaac Quaye, said the church which started in 1987 had grown to become a place for inspiration, hope and building lives through Christ.

He mentioned that the exercise constituted part of the church's social responsibility to society, and was targeted at early diagnosis and treatment diseases for members of the community.

Beneficiaries were also provided with drugs, food and clothing, while those with complications were referred to the nearest health facilities for further treatment.
