Baba Jamal calls for peace as Ayawaso East votes
The National Democratic Congress candidate in the Ayawaso East by-election, Baba Jamal, has appealed to voters and party supporters to remain calm and law-abiding as polling continues in the constituency.
Speaking after casting his ballot in Nima on Tuesday, he stressed the need to safeguard peace and ensure a smooth electoral process.
“I have already advised all my supporters to stay calm and also be law-abiding. We want to see a peaceful process, we want to see a peaceful election,” he said.
When Graphic Online visited a number of polling stations in the constituency in the morning, voting was underway but turnout remained low, with only a handful of voters in queues as electoral officials waited at their desks.
Some Electoral Commission officials indicated that they anticipated an increase in voter numbers later in the day, particularly after 3 p.m., when weather conditions were expected to be cooler.
Baba Jamal attributed the slow start to the religious composition of the constituency and the ongoing observance of Ramadan.
“This is largely a Muslim community, so I know the turnout will pick up as the day goes by,” he said, expressing optimism that participation would improve as the day progressed.
He reiterated his commitment to a peaceful contest. “We want to see a peaceful election. We will do everything to ensure the process is calm and fair,” he stressed.
The former Member of Parliament said his decision to contest the seat was motivated by a desire to serve the people of Ayawaso East rather than personal interest. He cited his previous parliamentary experience and pledged to rebuild and reset the constituency if elected.
