Bryan Acheampong outlines vision for resilient agriculture, salutes farmers on Farmers’ day

New Patriotic Party flagbearer aspirant Dr Bryan Acheampong has reiterated his commitment to building a resilient, innovative, and profitable agricultural sector, stating that Ghana’s future prosperity depends on empowering the farmers who feed the nation.

In his 2025 Farmers’ Day message, Dr Acheampong outlined a long-term vision that prioritises mechanisation, digitalisation, value addition, expanded irrigation and innovative financing models to address long-standing challenges such as post-harvest losses, limited access to credit and exposure to climate shocks.

He stressed that transforming agriculture from a subsistence activity into a pathway for national wealth creation requires deliberate investment, modern technology and policies that put farmers at the centre of development.

Dr Acheampong, a former Minister for Food and Agriculture, noted that since assuming duties in the agricultural sector, he has worked to widen access to inputs, strengthen extension services and improve market linkages for smallholder farmers.

He cited the cancellation of the cocoa syndication arrangement, which he said was introduced to protect the sector’s long-term sustainability, alongside timely fertiliser distribution and the rollout of multiple irrigation projects nationwide as key interventions that contributed to the bumper harvests being witnessed.

According to him, the historic rise in the cocoa producer price from about GH¢800 per bag to GH¢3,000 per bag under his tenure reflects his commitment to ensuring that cocoa farmers receive fair value for their labour and sacrifices.

Dr Acheampong acknowledged that significant challenges persist but said his agricultural vision is anchored on practical steps including:

  • Investing in mechanisation and digital tools to boost efficiency.
  • Developing stronger value chains to ensure Ghana processes what it grows.
  • Expanding irrigation and climate-smart solutions to shield farmers from erratic weather patterns.
  • Introducing innovative credit and insurance models that make financing more accessible and affordable for farmers.

He emphasised that these interventions would help transition Ghana’s agriculture from survival-based farming to a modern, competitive sector capable of driving economic transformation and national pride.

Extending his appreciation to farmers across the country, Dr Acheampong pledged to continue championing their welfare through Parliament and beyond, stating that creating the right conditions for farmers to thrive is central to Ghana’s long-term food security and economic stability.
