President Mahama commits to following due process in petitions asking for removal of Chief Justice

President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to uphold due process in relation to the three petitions asking for the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

The petitions—two submitted on February 14, 2025, and a third on March 17, 2025— are asking that the Chief Justice should be removed from office.

In a letter dated March 27, 2025, Justice Torkornoo requested that she should be served with copies to enable her respond as of establishing a prima facie case in relation to the petitions.

"I am humbly requesting His Excellency and the Council of State to furnish me with the petition and allow me time to respond," she stated, citing constitutional provisions ensuring a fair hearing and procedural integrity.

Leakage of letter on social media

"The President notes with disappointment that your letter was already in the public domain before he had the opportunity to review it," the Executive Secretary to the President, Calistus Mahama, stated. "This compromises the confidentiality expected under Article 146."

Despite concerns over the leak, President Mahama has assured the Chief Justice that the appropriate legal processes will be followed in handling the matter.
