From Movement for Change to UP: Alan Kyerematen unveils new political party UP Plus
Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen’s Movement for Change has transformed into the United Party (UP Plus), a new political entity launched in Accra on Thursday.
The rebranding, which according to the founder draws on the historical resonance of the United Party name, aims to champion accountability, economic progress, and inclusive leadership and help to redefine Ghana’s governance landscape.
At the launch event, the party's Chairman Abubakar Saddique Boniface outlined the vision behind UP Plus, describing it as a revitalised force for change. “Today, we present to you the United Party or UP Plus. We can call it 2.0 Plus. We were telling you, and I believe ourselves, that this party has come to resurrect the old bones in the agent who knows much about UP. The UP Plus is a political organisation meant to bring real change to governance. We will make a difference because of our focus on universal values and respect for the leadership of competence. We are not just taking people to lead us, but people who are credible, competent, and have a vision,” he declared.
Alan Kyerematen, the party’s leader, framed the rebrand as a pivotal moment for Ghana, promising a break from divisive politics and a focus on national development.
“Ghanaian politics. By offering Ghanaians a credible alternative, it can eliminate the culture of winner-takes-all. A new dawn that will bring about economic transformation, which will translate into massive job opportunities, usher in a golden age of business, and create prosperity for our country, Ghana. A new dawn that will mobilise the collective strengths and talents of all Ghanaians for national development, irrespective of age, ethnicity, religion, or political affiliation. A new dawn that will promote accountable and transparent governance and introduce a policy of zero tolerance for corruption. A new dawn that will at least protect the environment and promote sustainable development. Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, this is what underpins the establishment of the United Party,” Kyerematen stated.
It was explained that the Electoral Commission issued the party’s registration certificate on October 3, 2025, officially recognising UP Plus. The party’s emergence signals its intent to challenge Ghana’s entrenched political order by prioritising competence, transparency, and sustainable growth.
