A presidential aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has outlined a comprehensive plan to revitalise the party, pledging to strengthen the party’s grassroots structures and ensure greater inclusivity ahead of the January 31, 2026, presidential primaries.
It focuses on five key areas aimed at deepening internal cohesion and improving electoral outcomes.
Addressing nearly 700 delegates of the party at the Asato Community Centre in the Akan Constituency in the Oti Region, the former Vice-President presented what he described as a “new deal for the NPP grassroots,” anchored on empowerment, transparency and equitable participation.
Electoral strength
He said the NPP’s electoral strength lay in its polling station executives and constituency-level co-ordinators, who deserved structured support and recognition for their commitment to the party’s success.
“Our grassroots are the lifeblood of the NPP. We must build a system that recognises their sacrifices, supports their welfare, and gives them a direct stake in governance,” he said.
Welfare
Dr Bawumia pledged to establish a structured welfare database to support polling station executives and electoral area coordinators.
The system, he said, would undergo quarterly reviews to ensure fairness, inclusiveness and transparency.
Dr Bawumia announced that a proportion of national appointments—including positions such as Chief Executive Officers (CEOs), Ambassadors, Ministers and Deputy Ministers—would be allocated to constituencies across the country, forming part of his decentralisation drive.
He said that measure, estimated to create about 3,000 opportunities, was expected to strengthen the connection between government and the grassroots.
Constituency budget
Dr Bawumia proposed the introduction of a “Constituency Budget” system to empower local areas to directly address development priorities.
That approach, he explained, would shift national planning from a top-down model to one driven by local needs.
To maintain unity and pre-empt discontent, he announced plans to institutionalise regular constituency-level town hall meetings.
These forums would provide space to identify and resolve internal challenges before they escalated.
The former Vice-President also vowed to reform the party’s election financing model by ensuring campaign funds were transferred directly into official constituency accounts.
That, he said, would eliminate intermediaries, promote accountability and guarantee that every cedi was used to support mobilisation efforts.
Dr Bawumia described the proposed reforms as a “paradigm shift” that would make the NPP stronger, fairer and more responsive to its members’ needs.
Vision
A former District Chief Executive (DCE) for Kadjebi, Kofi Adjei Ntim, commended Dr Bawumia for his commitment to empowering the party’s grassroots.
He said the former Vice-President had demonstrated vision, humility and dedication to the NPP’s progress, qualities that made him well-placed to lead the party into the 2028 elections.
Mr Ntim, therefore, urged delegates to rally behind Dr Bawumia to consolidate the NPP’s unity and build on the gains made over the years.
