A statement by the International Democratic Union (IDU) has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to share its experience in the election petition with other centre-right political parties in Africa.

According to the like-minded centre-right international union, the education would move Africa’s democracy forward and bring peace to the continent, instead of wars over election results so as to allow investment and development to flow.

The statement was made when the IDU held its executive committee meeting in Lima-Peru in November 2013.

The meeting deliberated on local and topical issues around the globe  such as the democratic challenge in Latin America, democracy in Venezuela and Bolivia and prospects of democracy in Central America.

A statement issued by Mr Peter Mac Manu, Vice Chairman of the IDU, said the meeting commended the 2012 Presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo Addo, for the peaceful and civil means of justice he sought through the Supreme Court on the election petition.

The IDU Executive Committee also lauded  the NPP for recognising the ideals of liberal democracy and the need for economic growth based on individual initiative and a competitive environment.

The IDU is a centre-right international alliance of conservative, Christian democratic and liberal-conservative political parties.

Headquartered in Oslo, Norway, the IDU comprises 54 members and it is chaired by John Howard, a former Prime Minister of Australia.
