Northern Region NPP holds constituency elections

 

The Northern regional branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has begun its constituency elections to elect new executive members for the party in the 31 constituencies in the region.

So far, elections have been held in 18  constituencies. The constituencies covered include Bunkpurugu, Walewale,Salaga North, Sagnarigu, Tamale North, Central and South,Sawla, Bole, Geshiegu and Karaga.

The elections are is expected to end on December 28, 2013. 

According to the Regional Secretary of the party, Dr Clifford Braimah, the event, which was scheduled to have begun nationwide on December 14, 2013, was postponed in the region due to the bereavement of one of the regional executive members of the party and the performance of a Muslim pilgrimage to Yeji.

He, however, expressed optimism that by the close of the stipulated period for the exercise, all the constituencies would be covered.

The Deputy Regional Secretary of the NPP, Mr Haruna Iddrisu, noted that on Saturday, the party held the elections in 13 constituencies, adding that they were all very peaceful.

"To me, this is victory for democracy, and I want all party supporters to  remain calm, since the event was just an internal affair to strengthen democracy at the grass roots to unseat the ruling National Democratic Congress in 2016," he stressed.

At one of the constituency elections in Tamale North, the newly elected Women's Organiser, Ms Sherifa  Ahmed Tiyumba, 28, told the Daily Graphic that she was determined to work hard to mobilise all the women in her constituency to ensure victory for the party in the 2016 general election.

Ms Tiyumba, who is currently a final year student pursuing a Higher National Diploma in Secretaryship and Management at the Tamale Polytechnic, said she would operate an open door policy to help collate views on how best to bring development to the vulnerable in the society.
