Ugandan team studies immigration system

A six-member Ugandan delegation, led by that country’s Minister of Internal Affairs, Gen. Nyakairima Aronda, has toured the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) Academy and Training School at Assin Fosu, as part of a three-day official visit to Ghana.

They were taken round the GIS facility and also observed an "Obstacle Crossing" demonstration by some instructors of the school.

Resilient security set-up

Gen. Aronda commended Ghana and the GIS for the strides they had made in building a resilient security set-up.

He attributed Ghana's economic growth to its stable political climate, a fact he believed could not have been possible if Ghana only focused on strengthening her military and police institutions, adding that extending support to other security bodies such as the GIS and Narcotics Control Board had been crucial in maintaining the peace.

According to him, the challenge for Ghana was how it would tackle the creation and protection of jobs for its people vis-a-vis the management of migrant flow into Ghana.

Similarly, he was of the view that the benefits of integration could not be overemphasised but "how do we manage the objective of free movement of persons within the sub-region and at the same time ensure that the security of the people and individual states is not undermined?"

Strategic partnership

He called for strategic partnership and co-operation with the GIS, which is quite advanced in the area of immigration practice and development.

Gen. Aronda expressed the hope that GIS would assist the Ugandan government to set up its own training school and assist with the training of its personnel.

The Director of Immigration, Commissioner of Police (COP) Dr. P.A Wiredu, said the GIS had trained over 200 Liberian Immigration officers at its academy and training school.
