Ignore NDC’s claim in Volta Region — NPP

The Volta Region wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has reacted to the claim by President John Dramani Mahama that the NPP had nothing to show in the Volta Region in terms of development projects when it was in power  from 2001 to 2009.

They also said the people of the region must ignore the NDC’s claim that their government (NPP) had taken Voltarians for a ride.

Setting the records straight

The Volta regional wing of the NPP has, therefore, set the records straight that the NPP has a good record in the Volta Region and that the people in the region would attest to the countless projects and opportunities created for them by the NPP government in eight years as compared to the approximately 16 years of the NDC.

Addressing a press conference in Ho on  Wednesday, the Volta regional chairman of the NPP, Mr Peter John Amewu, said the NPP executed numerous projects in the region, including water supply, roads, education and several social interventions.

Achievements

He said in the Ketu District alone more than 15 communities were connected to water supply schemes in addition to the rehabilitation of the Ohawu irrigation scheme, the $84-million Keta Sea Defence wall, the resettlement housing project and that more than 70 per cent  payment to complete the sea defence  was made by the NPP  before it left office.

Mr Amewu said it was under the NPP that the Tema –Sogakope, Sogakope-Akatsi, Sogakope-Adidome, Dzodze –Akanu, Akatsi-Aflao, Anloga town roads, Dzodze town roads, Keta-Havedzi , Abor-Anyako, Aflao Hospital and Low Cost market roads, Abor Ohawu to Tadzewu, Abor-Anyako, Kave to Avalavi, Kasu Junction to Kave and Xevie –Abor, among other roads were executed.

He said the two major roads leading to the northern part of the Volta Region, that is, the Eastern Corridor and the Kpando–Dambai roads, were initiated by the NPP government, adding that about 70 per cent of the work along the Kpando–Dambai road was executed by the party.

He further said the NPP government started the Eastern corridor when it cut the sod in 2004 for the completion of Dzindziso to Pepesu portion of the road.

Education sector

In the educational sector, Mr Amewu said the NPP government facilitated the construction of a teachers quarters at Kporkuve, the construction of Wheta Senior High Technical School, establishment of nurses training school at the Keta government hospital, upgrading  of senior high schools at Dzodze and Wovenu at Tadzewu and the construction of massive infrastructure at the Ho Polytechnic.

He said under the NPP, Keta and Ketu South, all within the southern sector of the Volta Region, were elevated to municipal assembly status for which they are currently attracting urban development projects.

“Given these massive development projects executed by the NPP it will be gross understatement of the facts that the NPP did nothing for the region. When we juxtapose the performance of the NPP and the NDC in terms of the number of years each party served the region one will not be far from the truth to state that the performance of the NPP far outweighs that of the NDC”, he stated.

Relative tenure and achievements

Mr Amewu said  it was important to note that the (P)NDC  ruled for 29 years while the NPP ruled for barely 10 years and that it was the expectation that the Volta Region should have experience massive development because it had the highest number of Members of Parliament(MPs).

“The level of development does not match the massive number of votes and the MPs the NDC have in the region. This is a sad spectacle to behold indeed, “ he stated.

He said the people of the region were thankful to the NPP for bringing social interventions such as the National Health Insurance Scheme, free maternal care, metro mass transport, school feeding programme and LEAP which had all reduced the burden and torturing levels of poverty inflicted on the people by the NDC before the NPP came to power in 2000.

“These interventions at best have been destroyed by the NDC, inflicting pain on the people” he said .

Mr Amewu said there were now signs that the NDC was losing the Volta Region to the NPP and that the people were fed up and rejecting the lies of the NDC and wouldn’t to be taken for a ride any longer.

“The World Bank is becoming the World Hell, as living conditions of the people continue to deteriorate”, he said.

He promised that when voted into power the NPP will reconstruct the Ho to Aflao road and also create jobs for the youth and construct the Keta harbor as well as accelerate the exploration and production of oil and gas in the Keta basin.

Mr Amewu said the NPP will bring back the health insurance as a true social intervention programme and will restore the teacher training allowance.
