Ms Vida Konadu Ennin, who hails from Kwashiho in the Eastern Region, says she has no doubt in her mind that the people of Abetifi will vote for her.

“It appears I am the only woman who will be contesting for the position but I am certain that Abetifi people will elect me as their Member of Parliament (MP),” she said in an interview with the Daily Graphic.

Ms Ennin will be contesting with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, Mr Bryan Acheampong, and two other candidates whose identities are yet to be known.

Background

The Electoral Commission (EC) has set July 19, 2016, for the Abetifi Constituency by-election in the Eastern Region, following the death of the NPP MP for the area, Peter Wiafe Pepera.

The MP passed away on Saturday, May 21, at the 37 Military Hospital and he is to be buried on July 23, this year.

There were uncertainties over the by-election in the constituency after some political parties expressed concerns that the exercise would be too close to the 2016 general election.

The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has served notice that the party will not take part in the by-election.

According to the Eastern Regional Chairman of the party, Mr Tawiah Boateng, “five months to the general election is not prudent to take part in such an exercise.

The Abetifi Constituency has an estimated 43,773 voters. The figure excludes new registrants at the just-ended nationwide limited voters’ registration exercise.

The Abetifi constituency is one of the constituencies in the Eastern Region that remains a stronghold of NPP.

The NPP, in the 2012 general election, won 26 out of the 33 parliamentary seats in the region, including all the five newly created constituencies.
