Kwakye Ofosu slams NPP over February 18 'dumsor' demonstration

The Deputy Minister for Communication, Mr Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has slammed the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) for planning to demonstrate against the power crisis facing the country.

The NPP announced Tuesday that it would hit the streets on February 18 to protest the worsening electricity situation.

The NPP General Secretary, Mr Kwabena Agyapong, said the crisis was making life a hell for Ghanaians and had caused several small businesses which depend on electricity - barbering shops, saloons, and welding shops – to close down.

He said the demonstration would enable Ghanaians to tell the government that they have had enough.

But in a response of Accra-based Asempa FM, Mr Kwakye Ofosu condemned the NPP for planning the demonstration, which he said was unnecessary because the government was already taking measures to resolve the crisis.

He said some of the measures will see the government add 1000 megawatts of electricity to the national grid in the short term, while medium term projects will increase Ghana’s installed capacity to 5000 megawatts.

Mr Kwakye Ofosu added that the NPP’s planned demonstration was not in the national interest, stressing that it was a self-serving gimmick aimed at taking advantage of the power crisis to bolster the party’s political position.
