Parliamentary Select Committee on Energy visits Reroy Cables Ltd
The Parliamentary Select Committee on Mining and Energy last Monday paid a working visit to the Reroy Cables Factory in Tema.
Mr Kwabena Donkor, chairman of the committee, who led the 18-member delegation to the factory, urged indigenous companies to be proactive, innovative and retool their facilities in order to be champions of development in the country.
Welcoming the delegation to the factory, the Executive Director of Reroy Cables, Mr Reginald Quartey Papafio, who respresented the Chief Executive Officer of the company, mentioned high import tariffs, unfair competition from foreign companies, lack of access to markets, inadequate supply of electricity, and lack of subsidies and grants as some of the challenges facing indigenous companies in the cable industry.
The President of the AGI, Mr James Asare-Adjei, who was part of the delegation, urged home grown companies to as much as possible use local raw materials in the production of their goods.
The Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee said, “the committee, with oversight responsibility for the mining and energy sector of our economy, is delighted in promoting local content. Our visit today is to see for ourselves what our indigenous companies can do as well as ascertain the challenges they face”.
The delegation toured the factory floor of the company and commended it for the level of cleanliness of its working areas and state-of-the-art machinery, including the capacity of the company to meet local and international demands.
“We are very proud and have seen for ourselves the seriousness and strategic positioning of Reroy Cables to deliver local content in the development of our country,” Mr Donkor said.
