Under the arrangement, flag bearers and their running mates will be protected as part of the police administration’s eagerness to ensure safety and security for all before, during and after the November 7 general election.

The Inspector General of Police, (IGP) Dr John Kudalor, who made this known in Takoradi during his tour of some parts of the Western Region as part of preparations towards the general election, said by July 1, 2016 (today), every political party would receive  well-trained police officers to aid in their activities.

In recent past, the political parties, in their bid to ensure their leaders were protected from macho groups during campaign and other political activities.

Party youth groups

The IGP said as part of its preparation, the police also had had a series of meetings with various youth groups in the different political parties where issues about the elections were discussed.

He said the meetings were fruitful as the youth groups were committed to peaceful elections.

At the various meetings, he said, the postures of the participants, the police service and their leaders, as well as other party leaders, were direct and straightforward.

The meetings were clear indications that everyone was committed and working for the interest of a peaceful election.

The police service, he said, had come up with series of training and regular warm-ups to prepare its men for  them to be able to handle the task ahead in an impartial and professional manner.

Mockup exercises

The Regional Police Command mounted an exhibition and showcased how the region was preparing for the 2016 general election.

At the end of the exhibition, the Director General of Operations, Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno, commended the team in the region and urged them to undertake regular warm-ups.

He urged the men to approach their work with professionalism as prescribed by the rules of engagement.

The IGP and his team later met with senior police officers in the region and toured various police installations, stations and the regional headquarters and paid a courtesy call on the Western Regional Minister, Mr Paul Evans Aidoo, and his team.
