PPP to elect officers in Ashanti Region tomorrow
The Ashanti regional branch of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) will on Saturday elect officers to steer the affairs of the party in the region for the next four years at the Kumasi Polytechnic.
As of Tuesday when nominations closed, 19 party members had picked and submitted nomination forms, to contest the elections.
No vetting
Speaking to the Daily Graphic, the Regional Secretary, Mr Bismark Tetteh, said all those vying for the positions were of good character and good standing and, therefore, “there is no need scrutinising them”.
The event is expected to attract 33 delegates from each of the 49 constituencies in the region.
Current chairman
Surprisingly, the incumbent Regional Chairman, Dr Theophilus Ben-Kwofie, is not seeking re-election.
Unopposed aspirants
Eight persons are contesting their positions unopposed.
They include the Chairman, Lawrence Appiah; Secretary, Bismark Tetteh; Organiser, Vincent Gyamfi; Assistant Organiser, Armstrong Nana-Bonsu, and Women’s Organiser, Beatrice Serwaa.
The rest are Assistant Women’s Organiser, Harriet Oppong-Mensah, Eric Ohene Kwatiah and Assistant Youth Organiser, Prince Takyi.
Fierce contest
However, the position of vice chairman is being contested by Hunsunih Hamzah, Raphael Brobbey and Nana Agyenim Boateng, while the treasurer position is being fought for by Isaac Prah and Yaya Alhassan; Assistant Secretary, Anane Frimpong and Peter Aboagye; Youth Organiser, Haruna Bashiru Langie and Issah Baba Konpoh; and Education Secretary by Osei K Nkrumah and Peter Kofi Afriyie.
Planning
The regional secretary told the Daily Graphic that the party leadership had concluded discussions with the Regional Electoral Commission (EC) and the regional police command for the election and security matters respectively.
