Quality health remains my priority — Asokwa MP

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Asokwa, Madam Patricia Appiagyei, has stated that quality and accessible health of her constituents remains her top-most priority.

She said all investments in projects and programmes would come to naught if the health of the people was not properly catered for and they did not have quality and accessible healthcare delivery either.

Madam Appiagyei made the statement when she cut the sod for the construction of a 40-bed capacity maternity building at the Kumasi South Hospital in Kumasi.

The Gh¢600,000 maternity building will have a Mother and Baby Unit, a junior doctors room and office, offices for senior doctors, nurses’ changing rooms, a waiting area, a records’ room, 15 washrooms and a general outpatient area.

The MP is putting up the two-storey building from her personal resources with support from some international partners. As a start, she has presented a cheque for Gh¢150,000 to the contractor to start work.

Explaining the rationale behind her decision to construct the facility, she said in recent times, she had been inundated with calls from her constituents and some staff members of the hospital about the increasing number of expectant mothers who received care lying on the floor.

She said on her usual visits to facilities in her constituency, she chanced on some mothers lying on the floor and added that “as a mother, I was close to tears when I saw fellow mothers and their babies sleeping on the floor of the hospital”.

She attributed the lack of space in the hospital to the growing number of patients, which could be due to the competence and the hard-working nature of the doctors and nurses.

Madam Appiagyei insisted that she would ensure that the facility was expanded to cater for both patients and health service staff.

The Medical Director, Dr Kwame Ofori- Boadu, said the facility had 3,600 deliveries at the 64-bed capacity, describing the prevailing conditions as very unbearable.

Dr Boadu disclosed that the hospital had 135,000 attendances every year with only 19 beds at the maternity block for deliveries.
