This, he said, was needed so that the party could become stronger, better and more effective in delivering excellent governance and prosperity to the people of Ghana, based on integrity, vision and patriotism.

Congratulating the newly elected executive officers of the party in a statement, President Mahama said: “I have called our new party Chairman, Mr Kofi Portuphy, and congratulated him on winning a fair and democratic fight. I have also conveyed, through him, my congratulations and very best wishes to all the other members – both retained and newly-elected – who will now form a new solid leadership to provide an even more effective organisation for our great party, so that all Ghanaians can benefit from the skills, commitment and expertise we have to offer.”

New party officers

Delegates of the NDC, last Saturday in Kumasi, elected a mixture of old and new national officers to lead the party for the next four years.

Mr Portuphy is the new National Chairman, Mr Johnson Aseidu Nketia got his mandate as the General Secretary renewed while Mr Kofi Adams swept aside Mr Yaw Boateng Gyan to become the new National Organiser.

Mr Abdullah Ahmed Abdullah was the choice of the delegates for National Treasurer and Mr Solomon Yaw Nkansah got elevated as National Communications Officer.

For the National Vice Chairman spots, Ms Anita De-Sosoo, Mr Harry Zakour, Mr Lee Ocran, Alhaji Said Sinare, Mr Ofosu-Ampofo Samuel and Mrs Betty Nah-Akuyea Mould-Iddrisu were elected.

Mr Koku Anyidoho and Mr George Lawson were given the mandate as Deputy General Secretaries of the party.

Mr Joshua Akamba and Mr Mahdi Gibrill got the nod to lead the party as Deputy National Organisers. And for the Deputy National Treasurer position, Vida Addae was elected. Lastly, both Mr Kwaku Boahen and Mr Fred Agbenyo sailed through as Deputy Communications Officers.

President Mahama, who is the leader and flag bearer of the party, equally extended his immense gratitude to all the outgoing national officers of the NDC.

“Dr Kwabena Adjei, Boateng Gyan and others who have been replaced are committed social democrats and lifelong NDC stalwarts, and we must thank them very much for all the sacrifices and contributions they have made for the sake of the party and for Ghana,” President Mahama stated.

He added that those experienced party colleagues would still be needed to share their knowledge and advice to assist the new executive and the party in moving the government’s agenda forward.
