Refusing to concede defeat threatens democracy - Miracles Aboagye to Ken
The spokesperson for former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has warned that any presidential candidate who refuses to concede defeat despite an obvious loss poses a threat to Ghana’s democracy.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, October 15, Mr Aboagye stated that true leadership is measured by courage and a commitment to peace, particularly during tense electoral periods.
“A presidential candidate who refuses to concede defeat in the face of obvious loss at a time when there are multiple incidents of violence across the country is a coward and a danger to our democracy. Courageous leaders act in time to save our peace,” he wrote.
His remarks were in response to comments made by New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, who declared that he would only concede defeat in a presidential election after the Electoral Commission (EC) officially announces the final results.
During his campaign tour of the Savannah Region on Wednesday, October 15, Mr. Agyapong stated that conceding before the EC’s declaration would be premature and irresponsible.
“Until the last constituency results are declared, if I am a presidential candidate, I will never accept defeat. I will never accept defeat until the Electoral Commission comes out to declare,” he said.
