State burial for Harry Sawyerr

 

The government has decided  to give the late statesman, Mr  Harry Sawyerr, a state burial, President John Dramani  Mahama has announced.

He said considering the valuable contributions of the  late statesman and  politician to national development, they had decided to give him a state burial.

The President announced that when the family of the late Mr Sawyerr called at the Flagstaff House to officially announce his death.

The late Mr Sawyerr will be buried on Saturday, December 21, 2013, at the Basel Mission Cemetery after filing past at the forecourt of the State House from 7 a.m-11 a.m the same day.

On Friday, December 20, 2013 there will be a service  of honour at the Osu Ebenezer Presby Chuch from 6p.m to 9p.m.

President Mahama said the death of Mr Sawyerr came as a shock to him because of the personal relations he had had with the late statesman.

He said Mr Sawyerr had been a mentor who had shaped his political life, saying, since “I joined politics, the late Sawyerr has been of great support to me.”

President  Mahama also eulogised the late Sawyerr’s service to the nation, adding that “I know the services he had rendered to the nation in the pre-independence and post independence era. These were principled people who were loyal and trust worthy.”  

The President  recalled the various roles the late Sawyerr played in all sectors of the economy, particularly in the transport and educational sectors, as well as the National Democratic Congress (NDC), maintaining that the late Mr Sawyerr was a generous man. 

Nana Kwame Asante, who was the spokesperson for the family, lauded President Mahama for being among the first people who came to console and commiserate with the family.

Prof. Akilagpa Sawyerr  described the late Sawyerr as a public figure, national hero, man of many contributions, pioneer valuer and surveyor who served the country in many ways.
