Stop violence in north — NDF appeals

The Northern Development Forum (NDF) has made a passionate appeal to all residents in the three northern regions to put an end to all forms of violence.

According to the forum, it was concerned by the recent political and chieftaincy conflicts  and violence that had erupted in Bolga and its environs, allegedly caused by people of the same or different families and political parties.

It said in a statement that Bolgatanga and most towns in the northern part of Ghana were noted country-wide as friendly and peace-loving towns but unfortunately, of late, events tainted with violence in some parts of the north were depriving the area of these praise-worthy attributes.

The statement, signed by Dr. Hakeem Wemah, Chairman of NDF, said the Forum received with shock and dismay the news of the tragic death of Mr. Adams Mahama, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP’s) Upper East Regional Chairman as result of acid that was poured on him on Wednesday last week.

“ Whatever political reasons that may be linked to this barbaric act, it should be treated as a clear criminal case. The culprits should be dealt with as such so as to serve as a deterrent to others,” it stated.

The statement said while it condemned the heinous act, it expressed its sympathy and condolence to the family of Mr. Mahama, saying, “We share in their grief and loss and pray that the Almighty bless them”.

The statement also condemned any form of violence and asked all those who took delight in causing trouble to desist from such acts.

According to the statement, the north had too many development challenges to address that “we cannot and should not let partisan politics to take us away from these challenges which are of great concern to the NDF and the entire people from the northern part of Ghana.”

The forum further expressed the hope that all those causing violence would bury the hatchet and give peace a chance.

“Let us love one another without pretence, avoid what is evil and stick to what is good. We also hope that  all political parties, the Government, the Media, the  Electoral Commission, the National Commission for Civic Education and the law enforcement agencies will do all within their capacity to promote a conducive atmosphere of peace and tranquillity as we are preparing for the December 2016 Presidential and Parliamentary Elections,” the statement concluded.
