Vetting Committee’s decision on Afoko mature — Ayisi Boateng

The decision by the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) vetting committee to allow Mr Paul Afoko, who is vying for the Chairmanship to campaign alongside other contestants while the committee continued their investigations of various allegations levelled against him has been hailed by Mr George Ayisi Boateng as fair and a sign of maturity.

Describing the decision as just and mature, designed to sustain the peace in the party , Mr Ayisi Boateng said allowing Mr Afoko to campaign with the other three candidates while the committee delved into the allegations levelled against him would eliminate any issue of bias against any of the contestants. This will be a positive move in the party’s quest to elect members capable of  leading it (NPP) to victory  in the 2016 general elections.

“By showing keen interest in delving into the Paul Afoko matter,  the vetting committee is not only taking a cue from similar incidents that afflicted that party a few years ago, but also showing that the party does not want to be confronted with any eventuality after a candidate has been fully endorsed by our faithful delegates “Mr Ayisi Boateng said in an interview with Daily Graphic in Kumasi on Sunday.

“We want peace to reign in the party as we strive to wrest power from the National Democratic Congress government which has proved over the years that it does not have the capacity of initiating  policies and programmes designed to  provide meaningful socio-economic development in the country, but in doing so, the party’s interest should reign supreme, and override the parochial interest of individual members” he noted.

Expressing concern about  what he described as unguarded remarks by a section of members who claim to be leading members of the party, Mr Ayisi Boateng said such remarks, many of which bordered on tribal tendencies, had the effect of ruining the forward match of the party.

“I support one of the candidates to win  the chairman position, while other  members may have a soft spot for other candidates, but in doing so, they should not play any form of tribal cards in their choice of candidates. This is  because doing so amounts to betrayal of our great party” he said.

According to Mr Ayisi Boateng, individual members may have grievances as may be the case in any human institution, “but we have grievance procedures within the constitution which should be followed.

However,  it seems some members in their desire to derail the gains of the party, always  resort to using unguarded remarks instead of using due process .

Any personality who professes or tauts himself as a leading or founder member  of our great party should endeavour to use our channel of communication and grievance procedures to address challenges confronting them.

If in the middle of going through an important procedure of  electing party officers,  one kicks against  the regulations or guidelines on the process of selection , which had been in use for years, then I am afraid that person or group of persons should be sanctioned appropriately” he suggested.

“It is high time we instilled discipline that is very biting in the party  without fear or favour to put members on their toes . Our  philosophy borders on freedom of speech, but with responsibility as well “Mr Ayisi Boateng stressed.
