VIDEO: NPP committed to supporting legal mining - MP Nana Ayew Afriyie

Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie, Member of Parliament for Effiduase-Asokore, has reaffirmed the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) commitment to supporting legal mining operations, while drawing a clear distinction between responsible mining and illegal activities that harm Ghana’s forests and water bodies.

Speaking at a campaign event on Friday, September 27, Dr. Afriyie emphasized the government’s resolve to uphold legal frameworks in the mining sector, despite the potential political risks.

He accused the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) of spreading misinformation in Accra to undermine the government's credibility, particularly concerning the handling of mining activities.

Dr. Afriyie stressed that the NPP is focused on backing regulated mining practices, including in forest areas, and assured party supporters that this approach would remain unchanged.

The NPP will continue to support legal mining, even in forest areas, Dr. Afriyie said, adding that small-scale and community mining operations are different from illegal mining activities, often involving foreign nationals, which the government is actively working to stop.

The MP expressed confidence in the NPP’s prospects for the 2024 general elections, predicting the party would win all parliamentary seats in mining regions due to its strong connection with the mining sector and commitment to sustainable practices. He pointed to research conducted in August, which indicated strong support for the NPP in these areas.

They [NDC] know we’re winning the seats in mining areas, so they are doing everything possible to frustrate our votes, Dr. Afriyie said. They want us to lose our seats, but we will not stop illegal mining operations today or tomorrow.

He also condemned illegal mining in water bodies, vowing that the government would take firm action against those responsible, while assuring legal miners of continued support.

The voice of the people is the voice of God. Persons mining in water bodies are wicked, and we will stop them, he added, promising strict enforcement against such activities.
