The assembly will also adopt measures to promote household sanitation programmes, sensitise communities to desist from open defaecation and intensify public education to help curb the spread of HIV and AIDS and other sexually-transmitted diseases in the district.

The assembly’s efforts to improve the health status of persons in the district also include programmes to contain and combat the spread of tuberculosis, improve access to maternal, neo-natal, child and adolescent health services, and supervise a complete change in sanitation conditions in the district.

Speaking at a ceremony at Wachiau, during which the assembly’s composite budget for 2015 was presented, the District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr Dasaana N.S. Adamu, said matters of healthcare and education remained an important component of the government’s objective to improve the living standards of the average Ghanaian and to improve the quality of life of the people, stressing that the  district assembly would strive to attain those objectives.

Assembly’s composite budget

Presenting the assembly’s composite budget, the district budget analyst, Mr Yiryel Nelson, said the targets set by the district were derived from the broader objectives of the district’s programmes.

Concerning education, he said the objectives were to “increase equitable access to and participation in education at all levels” and “to improve quality of teaching and learning”.

The district, according to the budget analyst, was challenged by “irregular flow of funds for budget implementation, unplanned expenditures which are deducted at source from the District Assemblies’ Common Fund, inadequate co-ordination and information flow in the implementation of some projects, and low level of internally-generated revenue”.
