University of Ghana retains UPAC title

The University of Ghana (UG) men's basketball team retained the Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship by easing past Marshalls University College 41-23 in a one-sided final on Saturday in Accra.

The rampant UG team lived up to their pre-tournament billing as favourites and had accounted for the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) 45-20 in the semi-finals.

After making it five wins out of five matches, the Senior National Cricket team has emerged winners in the just ended ICC WCL Qualifier, Africa Region Qualifier tournament, held in Benoni, South Africa.

Ghana to break Guinness book of record’s most accurate football passes

Hundreds of Ghanaian football lovers will gather at the Junction Mall on April 22, with the hope of breaking the world record of the most accurate football passes.       

The record-breaking event is part of activities to mark the grand opening of West Africa’s largest sports store – Decathlon Ghana.

The current world record of accurate football passes stands at 596 accurate passes and is held by members of the Qatar Petrochemical Company, (QAPCO).

Ghana defender Harrison Afful returned to training with his MLS club Columbus Crew on Monday after recovering from a nerve injury in his hand.

Accra Stadium renovation to start June

Ghana's bid to host the 2018 African Women's Championship is likely to be derailed at the 11th hour by the poor state of the pitch at the Accra Sports Stadium. 

However, the Minister of Youth and Sports, Isaac Asiamah, has given an assurance that renovation works on various portions of the stadium, including regrassing of the playing field, will commence in June, this year.

Government will support Kwesi Appiah to succeed — Minister

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr Isaac Asiamah, has given an assurance that the government will provide Kwasi Appiah with all the resources he needs to succeed in his second stint as the coach of the senior national team.

Appiah was handed a two-year contract and will start his duties on May 1, but even before he assumes office, Mr Asiamah says the former Ghana international should rest assured that his latest tenure will witness a massive improvement in terms of the resources that will be at his disposal.

Azumah Nelson Sports Complex to be redesigned

The Ministry of Youth and Sports is considering reconstructing the Azumah Nelson Sports Complex which is in ruins and outlived its usefulness after its construction four decades ago.

Built in 1978 as a training facility for teams at the Africa Cup of Nations hosted by Ghana, the complex, named after Ghana’s sport icon and world boxing legend Azumah Nelson, is currently in ruins while portions of it are overgrown with weeds.

Troubled Kumasi Asante Kotoko, after parting ways with their Croatian coach Zdravko Logarusic last Sunday, hope to break away from their recent poor form and go for the kill against Wa All Stars in what promises to be an uncompromising Easter Sunday fixture at their dreaded Wa Stadium.

Kotoko, who are presently lying third on the league log and four points adrift of leaders WAFA, have experienced dwindling fortunes after their 0-1 loss to bitter rivals Hearts of Oak at the Accra Stadium and have since been held to barren draws against Inter Allies and Ebusua Dwarfs in Kumasi, and a 1-2 loss to Medeama SC at Tarkwa.

Kwesi Nyantakyi: I wiII step down in 2019

The president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kwesi Nyantakyi, has told the Graphic Sports that he will not seek a re-election into office when his current term ends in 2019.

According to Nyantakyi, the decision not to seek a re-election for a fourth term stems from his personal belief that ‘the best time to leave is when the applause is still very loud.’

One-time Asante Kokoto stalwart, Frimpong Manso, has been invited by Dr Kyei’s management to assist stand-in Coach Godwin Ablordey to re-chart a new path for the club and work in line with the Life Patron, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s directive to return Kotoko to Africa.

Ablordey, who until last Monday was an assistant to the sacked 52-year-old Croatian trainer Zdravko Lugarusic, was named the stand-in coach until a substantive coach is appointed, and the presence of Manso on the Kotoko bench is to team up with Ablordey to stir the team on to the right path.
