Mahama meets power producers, seeks investors to revitalise energy sector

President John Dramani Mahama met with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) on Monday, January 14 2025 to address Ghana's energy sector challenges.

The meeting revealed that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is grappling with a staggering 40% in commercial and technical losses.

During the meeting President Mahama emphasised the urgent need for a "transformative approach" to reform the energy sector, highlighting the critical role of transparent operations and competitive practices in resolving the sector's problems.

"We must operate more transparently and competitively, and together, we can find efficient partners to optimize our billing and metering processes," Mahama stated in a Facebook post following the meeting.

President Mahama acknowledged the significant debt burden within the energy sector, pointing to what he described as mismanagement of funds from the Energy Sector Levy Act (ESLA), which his previous administration had introduced to clear the sector's debts.

To address these challenges, President Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to supporting IPPs' contribution to Ghana's electricity supply and called for increased private sector participation in the energy sector.

"Ghana is open for business again," Mahama declared, inviting both local and international investors to revitalize the country's energy sector.

The meeting with IPPs comes amid growing concerns about Ghana's energy security and the financial sustainability of its power sector institutions.
