Black Loopers eye glory at West African tourney: Qualification for 2025 African Champs up for grabs

Ghana’s senior national table tennis team, the Black Loopers, are ready to serve up a strong challenge at the West Africa Regional Championships in Nigeria, which starts today, to Friday, July 18, 2025.

The regional tournament not only brings together the best players from across West Africa but also doubles as a qualifier for the 2025 African Championships in Rwanda, making it a crucial outing for the Ghanaian side.

The Ghana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) has named a provisional squad of ten athletes who will carry the nation’s hopes in both the men’s and women’s categories. The men’s team features top stars Emmanuel Commey, Israel Aklie, James Marfo, Francis Antwi and Godwin Alabi, all of whom bring a blend of skill, speed and international experience to the table.

On the women’s side is a formidable line-up comprising Cynthia Kwabi, Celia Baah-Danso, Bernice Borquaye, Eva Adom-Amankwaa and Hilda Agbottah, all determined to stamp Ghana’s authority on the regional stage.

The team will be under the technical direction of Coach David Senyo Ahiaba, with Coach Eva Ampah doubling as his assistant and head coach of the women’s squad. With both tacticians boasting years of experience on the international scene, expectations are high for Ghana to make a strong push for qualification.

“This is a crucial test for our players as they prepare to face top-level opposition from across the region,” said Coach Ahiaba. “We’ve been working hard in training, and the goal is clear — qualify for Rwanda 2025 and make Ghana proud.”
