Luis Díaz’s double helped 10-man Bayern Munich maintain their perfect start to the season winning 2-1 at the expense of defending European champions Paris Saint-Germain in the 2025/26 Champions League on Tuesday.
The German side made it 16 successive wins in all competitions — including four from four in the Champions League — to top the league phase table.
Díaz had a mixed night, scoring twice to put Bayern in control before being sent off on the stroke of half-time following a rash challenge from behind on Achraf Hakimi.
The Moroccan full-back was in tears as he was helped off with a serious-looking ankle injury, casting doubt over his participation in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) hosted in his homeland this December.
Hakimi left the stadium on crutches wearing a protective boot, and PSG captain Marquinhos said:
“We have to wait for the tests. They’ve done some minor ones already.”
In a chaotic first half at the Parc des Princes, Vincent Kompany’s side showed bravery and a willingness to press high up the pitch — a tactic that paid off when Díaz opened the scoring in the fourth minute.
Ousmane Dembélé thought he had levelled midway through the half with PSG’s first shot of the game, chesting in from close range, but his effort was ruled out for offside. The Ballon d’Or winner then limped off moments later with what appeared to be a calf injury.
Bayern continued to threaten, and were desperately unlucky when Serge Gnabry’s shot crashed off one post and onto the other. But Díaz struck again in the 32nd minute, dispossessing a slack Marquinhos before coolly finishing.
However, the Colombia winger’s night turned sour just before the break. A yellow card for his challenge on Hakimi was upgraded to a red following a VAR review, leaving the Moroccan visibly distraught.
PSG threw everything at Bayern in the second half but repeatedly ran into a brick wall. It looked as though they would find no way back — until substitute João Neves acrobatically halved the deficit with a bicycle kick 16 minutes from time.
That goal reignited PSG’s momentum, but Manuel Neuer produced a series of fine saves to deny Neves, Warren Zaïre-Emery, and Vitinha, ensuring Bayern held firm to inflict PSG’s first defeat of this season’s competition.
Next up, PSG host Tottenham on Wednesday, 26 November (20:00 GMT), while Bayern travel to face Arsenal — who have also won all four games — on the same night.
