Chess: Amoako makes history as Ghana’s youngest national champion

In a stunning display of skill and composure, 14-year-old Philip Selikem Amoako made history by winning the 2024 Ghana National Chess Championship, held early this month, at the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons Conference Centre in Accra.

The talented teenager triumphed in the 10-player round-robin tournament, finishing unbeaten with an impressive 7.5/9 score—becoming the youngest chess champion in Ghana’s history.

Amoako’s victory marks a significant milestone in Ghana’s chess scene, as he overcame seasoned opponents, including International Master Francis Anquandah (six points), Candidate Master Bernard Anhwere (6½ points) and Candidate Master Cephas Clinton Fomevor (six points).

His achievement signals a new generation of young chess players in Ghana who are beginning to make their mark on the international stage.

Upset

The competition’s sixth-ranked player, Amoako defied expectations by outclassing some of the country’s top-rated players.

His performance shows that Ghana’s chess future is bright, and with his victory, Amoako now holds the distinction of being the youngest ever to claim the national title.

The young prodigy first garnered attention in 2021 when, at just 11 years old, he won a silver medal in the Under-12 Open Category at the African Youth Chess Championships, earning the conditional title of Candidate Master.

His victory in the 2024 National Championship is yet another remarkable achievement in his rapidly rising career.

The tournament featured the top five players from the FIDE ratings and the top five finishers from the December 2024 qualifiers.

Ghana Chess Association (GCA) President, Philip Ameku, commended Amoako’s achievement, stating, "Selikem's victory is a testament to the incredible potential of young chess players in Ghana. His success will undoubtedly inspire a new generation of players across the country."

Reflecting on his remarkable victory, the teenage sensation expressed his gratitude to his family, coaches and the chess community for their support. "Winning the national championship is a dream come true," he said.

"I hope my success encourages other young people to take up chess and pursue their passions with the same dedication I’ve shown."

Remarkable journey

Amoako's journey has been nothing short of impressive. He made history as the first Ghanaian to win a medal at the All Africa Youth Chess Games and became the youngest recipient of the prestigious National SWAG Award Medal at the age of 11.

In addition to his chess success, the youngster has met some of the world’s top chess players, including Magnus Carlsen, Ding Liren, and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, having even made a ceremonial move between these two chess giants at the London Chess Classics.
