What to look forward to.
1. Premier League
The focus in the Premier League will fall on the race for European slots, with Newcastle United, Chelsea, Aston Villa, Manchester City and Nottingham Forest all vying for three places in the top five which will secure UEFA Champions League football for 2025-26.
The key clash comes from the City Ground, where underdogs Nottingham Forest will look to upset the Blues – and hope that results elsewhere go their way – to make a return to the top table of European football for the first time since 1980! But England is not the only football hub closing out its topflight season on ‘Africa Day’, Spain’s La Liga and Italy’s Serie A will also close out their 2024-25 campaigns on Sunday 25 May.
2. La Liga
In La Liga, the focus falls on Barcelona visiting Athletic Bilbao at the San Mames Stadium. Barca secured the title last week with a win over local rivals Espanyol and will head to the Basque country in a celebratory mood – though you can bet Los Leones would love to defeat the champions and lay down a marker for next season.
3. Serie A
In Serie A, the Scudetto will be decided between Napoli and Inter Milan by the time we get to Sunday, but there will still be a major focus on the fight for Champions League qualification. The top two and Atalanta are all qualified, but the final guaranteed place is up for grabs between Juventus, Roma and Lazio.
Juve have pole position and know that a win away against Venezia will guarantee a top-four finish, but their hopes are complicated by the fact that their hosts at the Pier Luigi Penzo Stadium have a chance of avoiding relegation – if they can defeat the Turin giants, and results elsewhere go their way.
That could open the door for the capital city clubs, Roma and Lazio, who will battle Torino (away) and Lecce (home respectively). It’s going to be a nail-biting evening in Italy for fans of the Bianconeri, Giallorossi and Le Aquile!
