Female bodybuilder aims high
Ghanaian female bodybuilding sensation, Bambi Bamfo, has disclosed that she prepared for the Olympia Amateur Africa 2014 Bodybuilding Championships by watching videos of professional female bodybuilders on the Internet and mimicking their poses.
The 27-year-old Bambi said unlike other participants in the keenly contested Female Bikini Fitness category, she did not have the services of a coach and make-up artist and so had to rely on knowledge from a pre-tournament seminar and YouTube videos to finish sixth out of 21 participants.
“I got interested in bodybuilding three years ago and with the help of the Ghana Bodybuilding and Fitness Association (GBFA) I have been able to achieve a lot though I want to achieve more.
“Most of the girls at the competition in South Africa had coaches and make-up artists but I did not so I consider my performance as quite a feat. I learnt a lot of Bikini Fitness poses from videos on the Internet and also how the poses were scored from a pre-tournament seminar in South Africa.”
Bambi has since set her sights on winning a medal at the Spanish Bodybuilding Championships which comes off at a yet-to-be-disclosed date in December.
Bambi said: “I have gained a lot of valuable experience and knowledge from competing in my first international competition and this knowledge would come in handy when I participate in Spain and I hope to win a medal for Ghana.”
Bambi, who is a nurse at the Nyaho Medical Centre, entreated women to start bodybuilding as a means of losing weight easily without side effects rather than taking pills.
“We need more women in the sport. I was a bit plump before starting and now my figure is great and I just need to firm up my gluteus muscles. I am also willing to help train any woman who wants to join the sport, I can be contacted at @binoluvfitnessgh on twitter and binoluvfitness on facebook.com”.
