GBF yet to take decision on future of Black Bombers coaches

The management of the Ghana Boxing Federation have not taken any decision to dispense with the services of the technical handlers of the Black Bombers after their poor outing at the just-ended Olympic Games qualifier in Senegal.

Out of the 12 boxers that went to Senegal for the qualifiers, none picked up a slot to the world's most prestigious sports gathering in Paris next year which has informed calls from the public for the coaches to be sacked.

However, the vice-president of the Ghana Boxing Federation, Dauda Fuseni, said they would defer any decision to sack the technical handlers now until a proper assessment of what transpired at the tournament was made before coming out with a decision.

According to the GBF first vice-president, calling for the heads of the coaches at this moment will amount to jumping the gun and wants a thorough investigation to establish what happened before any decision about their removal could be taken.

''I don’t have to say anything for now because it is too early for us to be talking about these things because they just finished the tournament,'' he answered as to whether the GBF would heed the call of a section of the public to sack the coaches.

''Let them come back home first then we can go back to the drawing board to see whether it is the styles that we need to change or the technical team, then we can think about it but for now I don’t want to talk about it,” he said.

He admitted that the country presented its best boxers to the competition, saying it was after the individual championships that the best were selected to represent the country at the event.
''We presented the best boxers to Senegal because we organised individual championships and we selected boxers. Though we didn’t finish, we selected the boxers we thought had made it to the semis and the finals.”

“One thing we should also realise is that it’s not about you winning a gold medal in individual championship that gives you automatic qualification to the tournament. There are so many things that add to it before we can pick or select a best boxer which includes discipline, hard work and a lot of other things,” he disclosed.
