Ghana Baseball President launches National League, pledges to build sustainable sporting ecosystem

President of the Ghana Baseball and Softball Association, Ernest Danso, has outlined an ambitious vision for the future of baseball in Ghana following the official launch of the country’s first National Baseball League at Koshen Park, Labone SHS, in Accra on June 28.

Speaking at the historic event, Mr Danso described the launch as a “giant leap forward” for the sport in Ghana. He said the league would not merely serve as a platform for competition but as a strategic channel for talent discovery, development, and national pride.

“This league is not about competition; it is a platform for talent discovery, a channel for growth, and a statement that Ghana is ready to take its place on the continental and global stage,” he said.

He recounted the federation’s early struggles, highlighting how passionate coaches and volunteers nurtured the sport under difficult conditions, often using improvised equipment and training on dusty school grounds. But through “persistence, unwavering belief and shared determination,” he said the sport has gradually gained roots in local communities and schools across the country.

“We believed in the values that baseball teaches—teamwork, discipline, patience, and opportunity,” he stated. “We are now building a sustainable ecosystem, one that will not only raise the level of play but also attract investment, increase media interest, and open doors for educational and athletic advancement of our youth.”

Outlining his bold vision for the future, Mr Danso said the federation plans to expand the league to include youth, women’s, and school divisions, qualify for international tournaments, and build standard baseball fields in all regions.

“This is only the beginning. Our vision for the future is bold. We are not content with merely participating—we aim to lead,” he declared.

He called on the government and private sector to support baseball as a tool for youth development, character building, and national pride. “Let’s move forward as one team, one mission. Let us raise the flag of Ghana high, not just in victory, but in how we inspire and how we build.”

Also present at the launch was Ghana Olympic Committee President, Richard Akpokavie, who expressed excitement over the initiative, praising its potential to empower young people.

“Sports have the power to make young people better human beings for themselves, their families, and the country,” Mr Akpokavie said. He urged the young athletes to live by the Olympic values of excellence, respect, and friendship. “Be the best of the best. Respect your body, your peers, and the game. And build friendships—because we are one people, one destiny.”
