Ghana captain Jordan Ayew scores, but Leicester stay in relegation zone
Jordan Ayew struck late to rescue a point for Leicester City, but the Foxes remain mired in the relegation zone after a 1-1 draw with Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship.
Leicester, desperate for victory against the league’s bottom side, dominated large spells of the contest but were repeatedly denied by an outstanding performance from Wednesday goalkeeper Pierce Charles.
The hosts made a dream start, taking the lead just two minutes into the game when Jerry Yates capitalised on defensive hesitation to bundle home from close range after a corner.
Leicester responded with urgency, creating a string of chances, but found Charles in inspired form. Ghanaian winger Abdul Fatawu Issahaku missed an early opportunity to level, while efforts from Oliver Skipp and Stephy Mavididi were expertly kept out.
Despite sustained pressure, the visitors were unable to break through before the interval, with Wednesday holding onto their slender advantage heading into the second half.
Leicester resumed on the front foot, continuing to probe for an equaliser, but Charles remained resolute. Wednesday nearly doubled their lead when Liam Palmer dragged an effort narrowly wide after a swift counter-attack.
The turning point came late in the game after Leicester had hit the woodwork and forced a series of saves. With six minutes remaining, Ayew produced a moment of quality, firing a powerful right-footed strike into the bottom corner to restore parity. The forward has six goals in the Championship this season.
Leicester pushed for a winner in stoppage time, with Ayew going close again, but Charles delivered one final save to deny the Ghana captain and secure a point for the hosts.
The result lifts Leicester to 22nd place, but they remain in the relegation zone, one point behind safety with five matches left in the season.
