Goalkeeper Benjamin Asare now Ghana’s number one – Otto Addo declares

Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has confirmed that Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare is currently Ghana's number one goalkeeper, following back-to-back clean sheets in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Asare, 32, received his first national team call-up in March and started in Ghana’s 5-0 win over Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium on March 21. He was once again given the starting role in Ghana’s 3-0 victory over Madagascar on Monday night, helping extend the team’s lead at the top of Group I to five points.

Speaking after the match, Otto Addo said: “I think the next game is in June, and at the moment, he’s the number one. We decided for him. He did well in training. We have a good situation where the keepers are pushing each other.”

The former Dortmund star also praised Ati Zigi and Jojo Wollacott, who were on the bench for the two matches, for their support and attitude throughout the week.

“I’m really thankful for how Ati Zigi and Wollacott behaved this week, how they pushed Benjamin and supported him. I don’t take it for granted. Big props to them. Benjamin deserved it, and I’m very happy for him,” Addo added.

The Black Stars produced a masterclass in dominance as they cruised to a 3-0 victory over Madagascar in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Mimoun Al Arsi Stadium in Morocco.

The emphatic win, powered by Thomas Partey’s brace and a clinical finish from Mohammed Kudus, cemented Ghana’s position at the top of Group I, opening a commanding five-point gap over their closest rivals.

Fresh off a 5-0 demolition of Chad in Accra last Friday, Otto Addo’s side carried their momentum into yesterday’s crucial clash, controlling proceedings from start to finish. Captain Jordan Ayew was the architect of all three goals, delivering an outstanding performance that underlined his importance to the team.
